100 families evacuated in Kidapawan after twin quakes

Mayor Joseph Evangelista of Kidapawan City has ordered the forced pre-emptive evacuation of more than 100 families from at least two villages following the twin tremors that rocked North Cotabato and Davao del Sur provinces on Sunday.

The Kidapawan residents were from two sitios in Barangays Ilomavis and Balabag, both situated at the slope of Mt. Apo.

“That is a precautionary move against subsequent aftershocks,” Evangelista said in a statement following Sunday’s 7:28 a.m. and 12:22 p.m. earthquakes that were traced to Magsaysay, Davao del Sur as the epicenter.

He told the residents that the city government remains on top of the situation and will provide constant updates.

“I urge Kidapaweños not to panic and maintain the presence of mind at all times,” he said.

He also ordered the closure of the city hall building and all other city government offices in the vicinity up to 1 p.m. Monday for inventory and physical inspection.

“This is to give ample time for building inspectors to check the structural soundness of the buildings,” he said.

He added that except for those involved in the provision of health, social welfare, and emergency services, all offices of the city government will be physically closed for half day. (PNA)
